Chapter 11

Peggy went into her house and collected the money which needed to be deposited urgently into her bank account. The bank was a short walk away so we decided to leave the car behind and stretch our legs.

As we walked along, Peggy gave me some theories about who could have killed Howie. She said, “The spouse is always a suspect. You went to school with Vanessa. What was she like? Is she capable of murder?”

I chose my words carefully. “She wasn’t the kindest of people. I’m not sure if she would be capable of murder, though. But there again, who knows what people are capable of? When she came to the café, she seemed proud of Howie and his business success. I can’t think why she’d want to kill him and in such a public manner too.”

Peggy said, “Perhaps she wanted his money all to herself. Or perhaps he was spending too much time with his acting friends and she thought she’d put an end to it. Is she the jealous kind? Does she hold grudges?”

I took too long in trying to choose my words this time and eventually said, “I don’t know her that well.”

Peggy stopped walking and put her hand on my arm. “Karis, there’s something you’re not telling me. Did Vanessa give you a hard time at school?”

I gave her a small nod.

“Was she one of those who called you that cruel name?”

Another nod. “She’s the one who gave me that nickname.”

Peggy’s mouth settled in a grim line. She carried on walking. “When can we talk to the grieving widow? I was going to take it easy on her, but not anymore. She’s my prime suspect now. Where does she live?”

“I don’t know. I don’t want to talk to her. Peggy, let Seb deal with Vanessa. Please.”

“Okay. For now. Who else would want Howie dead? We don’t know anything about the other people in the play. Or the people behind the scenes. What about the woman who made the tea? What do we know about her?”

“I’m sure Seb is dealing with all of that.”

“I suppose he is,” Peggy relented. “What about Howie’s building firm? How’s that doing? Is it successful? Or in trouble?”

“Vanessa said it was successful. She told Erin and me about the exotic holidays they go on. She was wearing expensive clothes when we saw her.”

Peggy said, “She could be lying. I know I haven’t met her, but I don’t like her. What about the staff Howie employed? How did they get on with him? What about his business rivals? Did he have any?”

Peggy stopped walking again and put a hand on her forehead. “I’m giving myself a headache with all these questions. We’ve got our work cut out for us. I don’t think I’ll have time to do my blog post today.”

“Seb and his officers are dealing with all of this. Let them get on with their job. If I get any visions, then I’ll let Seb know. Peggy, you don’t have to get yourself involved so much.
